The Hukilau Marketplace honors the world-famous La’ie Hukilau, first staged on nearby La’ie Bay in 1948. It was an ancient Hawaiian style of net fishing where people on the beach pull on ropes tied with dangling leaves that scare fish into a net as its drawn to the shore. Afterward, the fish would be shared.
The Hukilau Marketplace brings back the aloha spirit of those earlier times. The dozens of shops and attractions reflect La’ie’s unique history and people. In fact, some are operated by their descendants and other community residents.
Highlights include the Hamana Kalili Statue, where you can take a picture with the man who invented the shaka. There’s also The Ukulele Experience, an interactive shop based around the history of the popular Hawaiian instrument and how it’s made. Plus, you can also visit the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame, where you can see tribute videos and memorabilia of famous NFL athletes of Polynesian descent.
Combine that with live, local entertainment, and you might just have the most inviting shopping experience in all of Hawaii.
